Greetings, fellow mortal. How have you been? How has the world been treating you? Today is a sad day as we came to know that AIM which is AOL’s long-running instant messenger service acting as a core to many people’s first social experiences on the internet, is finally coming to an end. It will shut down once and for all on December 15th. It was announced by AOL today itself, acknowledging the fact that people are opting new ways to communicate.
Michael Albers who is the communications product VP at Oath commented that “AIM tapped into new digital technologies and ignited a cultural shift, but the way in which we communicate with each other has profoundly changed.”
The company has severed all the access to AIM from third-party chat clients back in the month of March, hinting about this shutdown. Of course, there are many people who are still using AIM and it will be a huge difference for them. AIM was once one of the first and most successful instant messengers who took the world by a storm. It was popular in the late ‘90s and even throughout the 2000s. But with time, when the reach of smartphones broke unthinkable barriers, everything changed. Text messaging has replaced desktop instant messaging apps at a very rapid rate. We have facilities like Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook. These have revolutionized the manner in which people converse. Facebook has multiple billion-user messaging services at this point of time. That is something to appreciate and talk about.
AIM is not the only one who is shutting down, rather it has joined the trail of classic apps which have closed with time such as MSN Messenger closed in the year of 2014, Yahoo Messenger which only shut down last year but Yahoo launched a new messaging service under the same name. It was only a matter of time for AIM to close as well. But this doesn’t change the fact that it will be a sad and nostalgic affair. Now that AIM is leaving us; it might be your last chance to construct the perfect away message.
Everything that rises comes down. It is the law of nature. The departure might be sad, but it is inevitable, we have no choice but to accept it. So, it would be wise that we bid adieu happily and reminiscence the times when it was the most in thing.
Do leave your feedback in the comment section. We would be waiting.
Thank you for reading. Au revoir reader.
